Welcome enjoy the guest book
Dear Will, You may remember me from our one and only meeting at the Carlos Vega B'day Memorial concert in L.A. in 2001. I sent you some picutures taken that night through our common friend David G. (one is with Paul Jackson Jr., Steve Lukather, you and me). I confess that I haven't been checking your site too much lately but be sure that I am still waiting for your solo album to be released ! :-) I remember an interview you did for MD about 2 years ago where you spoke a lot about the Will Kennedy Krew. I truly hope that this project has not been shelved and that it will see the light of day very soon. Hope to hear good news soonest. All the very best. Thanks for the music ! Laurent Laurent (jazzhard@hotmail.com) Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 05:28:04 (PDT) Hey Brother Kennedy, Psalm 150:5-6 In one breath I give Him all the Glory. In the same breath I give you thanks for your power- filled percussion evangelism draped in His grace and manifested in your cymbals. I lose my mind in Christ, I lose it again everytime I hear you witness in your music. I believe the Chief Musician is going to be out of a job when you arrive. Steve Tocco Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 20:16:50 (PDT) Will, I have listened to your drumming on countless Yellow Jacket albums. Plus my son bought "be a drumhead" video. My question to you is "how hard was it for you to leave the YJ?" I know live goes on and all things must pass, but the music of YJ with you on the drums is so special to me and the things that have happened to me and the places I have been. It's legendary as far as I am concerned and wish I had the chance to see you live when you played in Los Angeles. Ed Moreau (edmoreau@yahoo.com) Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 15:46:07 (PDT) Man your feel is unreal. I met you a few years ago at a Yellowjackets concert in Birmingham, AL. I've been a huge fan of your's and the Jackets for years. I'm a Christian, and I think your testimony is awesome. Also, just heard about Vinnie Colaiuta being a Christian. Incredible. Will you be anywhere near the Indianapolis area in the near future? I would love the chance to see you play live again, and possibly speak with you. Please let me know. Thanks! I WAS A MEMBER OF THE JAZZ ADVISORY BOARD AT A LOCAL SMOOTH JAZZ STATION IN CHICAGO. BEING A MEMBER GAVE ME ACCESS TO ALBUM AND CONCERT SCREENINGS. BY FAR SCREENING THAT "ALBUM AND CONCERT WAS MY MOST INCREDIBLE JAZZ EXPERINCE. WILLS PLAYING WAS PHENOMENAL. THE WAY THE BAND "MESHED" IN MOVEMENT WAS THE MOST AWESOME THING I HAD EVER SEEN OR HEARD. THEY BECAME AND STILL ARE MY MOST FAVORITE JAZZ BAND OF ALL TIME . BUT THE YELLOWJACKETS ARE JUST NOT THE SAME WITH OUT WILL AND MARC RUSSO. I AM VERY INTERESTED IN HEARING ALL OF WILLS PERFORMANCES SINCE YJ. Liz Miller (Elizabeth_c_miller@yahoo.com) Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 16:13:54 (PST) As a young drummer your playing helped guide me, and kept that fire going in my own playing to keep on learning. Not only are your chops flawless, but your timing and groove impeccable as well. I think that's what impressed me the most. It really boils down to the soul and emotion we convey through what we play and when we play it. Will, you are a true inovator and are definitely a legendary player. Richard Clark (richclark60@yahoo.com) Wednesday, December 03, 2003 at 08:35:30 (PST) i have folowed you since you joined the yellowjackets with four corners. i never heard a drummer who can change the whole layout of a song with so many multiple rythms. it was heartbreaking to see you leave, but life moves on and i am still dans fo you and the 'jackets. when do you have a musical project coming out? Kenneth Dodson Sr (mrkdodson@yahoo.com) Tuesday, December 02, 2003 at 17:27:52 (PST) Will - what can I add that hasn't already been said about your amazing talent? From where I sit, I cannot recall another instance where the DRUMMER(!) made such a tremendous impact on a group as was the case when you replaced Ricky Lawson on drums for The YellowJackets. The next closest thing for me would be David Garibaldi's work with Tower Of Power, but I would still have to place your impact on the Jackets as the most profound. With the combination of you, Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, Marc Russo, and later Bob Mintzer, The YellowJackets were truly in a league all their own. Thanks for the awe-inspiring work as a member of that ensemble. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, wherever they may take you. - L.C. Nice site! well, i would like to see you once right here in Hungary! Tomi Tomi (kovacsik@hotmail.com) Tuesday, November 04, 2003 at 03:49:11 (PST) Hey will, just dropped in to give you a big UP. You have a great Drumming style and you seem very relaxed with it. I discovered you at DrummerWorld.com by watching your drum solo clip. I was impressed with your approach to the set, its very different and powerful. Nicely balanced and tight control. I noticed that you are a lead-left-hand player (which I've been practicing for quite some time now) and because of which give's you greater flexibilty around the set which you demonstrate perfectly. I could use some of your input about the lead left hand. Some Drummers think that I play "lead-lefty" naturally (but I don't because I'm naturally right handed) and they ask me how did I learn to play this way. I tell them that I studied Simon Phillips style for 2 years (1992-94) and went from there. But Will, you have a graceful fluidness about your lefty style, what can I do to possess the same feel? Keep kickin A*s Will Kennedy, I love your drumming style and approach. --Raine. Keith Hollis (inthepoccit@comast.net) Sunday, October 05, 2003 at 18:21:27 (PDT) I saw the yellowjackets live with the new guy and almost had a heart attack. There is a H U G E difference in capability and the new guy has no clue as to what micro-rythms are. He's soooooooooo loose that it actually irritated me. My wife saw the dissapointment and asked if we should leave ... I finished out the show but that's pretty much it for them . They're now a shell of the old band gone commercial. The rest of the instruments sound diminsihed against bad drumming. They sounded so average and garage-like. Hell I swear I could have come up with a better drummer than Will's replacement. Oh well, All good things must come to an end I guess and the whole will never be that again maybe even for Will .... My many congratulations to you and your wife on the birth of your son Joshua. God's blessings are wonderful no doubt. WIll, I have always enjoyed your playing and the spirit that you brought to the jacket's music. I am a touring drummer as well and love your approach to laying down some of the most wicked grooves I have heard. Your touch is beautiful!! Can you share any information on your approach to your groove playing and capturing some of that spirit. I have enjoyed your playing as well as the playing of Paco Sery, and Moktar Samba. There is a certain essence that is distinct yet common within you three when it comes to laying down the grooves within the music you play. This is what I am after. I would also like to know what snare drum(s) and the sizes you used with the Jacket's. I love the crack yet bottom end you got from the snare drum(s) you used. God has bless you with a great gift to share with the world and you have touched me with it. Thanks so much. I wish you continued success. God Bless....... Your influence in my drumming life, however, is anything but minute. I met you only once and that was all it took. The Maranatha Worship Leader Workshop in Dallas a few years back was an event (and an experience) which changed my life permanently. You were touring with Gary Sadler and company at the time and I had the WRONG impression of you from the start. When I walked into the sanctuary of that HUGE church and saw you up on stage I thought to myself, "Who's that kid up there? I can take him!" It was a very short workshop, but I learned an AWFUL lot that weekend. You were anything BUT a kid up there and I was quickly aprised of your talent within a few minutes of exposure to it. Without a doubt, your presence there was felt... or rather the presence of Him who gave you your ever-growing talent, by the congregation in that sanctuary as well as those in the small room where we (drummers only) met the next day. I was awe-inspired and I soaked up every word you said and every lick you played. You and I were only able to speak briefly, but you instructed me in those moments on how to best tune my kit, what type of heads to purchase, etc. But most of all... to let GOD be my focus while on the platform at my church. I've been the praise team drummer for First Baptist in Watauga, TX for 6 years now and your guidance is still with me. Witnessing this site now has me even more convinced that God had HUGE plans for you and I was to be but one of the many THOUSANDS of lives you have touched so positively. Your gifts are many, Will. One of your greatest has to be the ability you have to share them so completely with others through ministry of clinics and even concerts. I know that your walk with Him must be a daily one, or your successes would be few. Thank you, Will, for being a bright spot on the aspirations of this musician among musicians. God bless you always! Bill Daniel (Drumstix03@sbcglobal.net) Saturday, June 07, 2003 at 22:07:23 (PDT) This message is for Mrs. Francyne K. Kennedy and her husband Will. Hughes Family Tuesday, June 03, 2003 at 14:25:46 (PDT) Hey Will, Let me just start by saying I think you are one of the most amazing musicians to ever play the instrument, and by far my personal favorite. I first heard you and the Yellojackets when the Jazz Fusion group I played with at a community college covered a tune off the Live Wires album. I have never been the same. It's as though the drums are a part of you. I love how you don't just beat them, but your touch and the way you add to the music amaze me every time I listen. I was also thrilled when I learned of your spiritual walk. That has probably been the biggest inspiration of all. I am also a believer. I graduated from Oral Roberts University in May 2002 and was very involved in music ministry there. I now play around the Phoenix area and with my church worship team. Just wanted to let you know how much of an inspiration you are. God bless you and yours. On a side note. I am ordering a custom kit from Noble & Cooley this week (approved by the Mrs). I know you have played them in the past and was wondering did you use a 14 inch floor tom with legs or mounted, and why do you prefer the legged now? I love your sound. Do you recommend legged? Thanks. Dennis (age 26) Dennis Williams (chopstix77@hotmail.com) Tuesday, June 03, 2003 at 12:33:29 (PDT) Hi Will! Wonderful website - I found a gem this evening. I've been a fan for many years and I have to tell you that your playing has been a great inspiration to me... even if I am a low note slinging bassist! Your pocket is incredible, everything you do just SWINGS and your sense of dynamics and control of the ensemble is just awesome. Here's wishing you the best, and I'm excited to hear more incredible music. Max (bateria@libero.it) Friday, May 23, 2003 at 00:51:14 (PDT) Hey Will. Here in These Parts I'm one of the few musicians who speak about you & the Jackets. You've been a great influence on my drumming. I play a 5-piece pearl kit and some time ago I've modified my setup exactly like yours (1-racked tom & 2-floor toms). Here in Cape Town there are few if any drummers that comfortably play a setup like that. I've only seen an old video recording of you playing with THE YELLOW JACKETS years ago at the montreaux jazz festival. I think the song you guys done was in 7/4 time (don't know the title) and in inspired me. other than that I've only heard the CD "Run Fer Yer Life" By the JACKETS and to this day, going only on what I've been exposed to of the band, you have been the BIGGEST influence on my life & my Drumming. I'm a Christian and I work full time at my church as the administrator. I Lecture part time at a music & arts academy as well as part time private lessons & I am experiencing what a joy it is to impart and invest in the lives of other young musicians & I think to myself what it must be like for you who influence drummers all over the world. I would really like to hear from you SOMEHOW if it's possible. you can contact me at jansenmf@nampak.co.za ,I really wish i could get some kind of material from you. Trust me, in South Africa I'm probably your biggest fan. You should come to South Africa for some clincs. New talent is exploding and fresh here & hungry for education. I pray for God to enlarge your territory Will and to Bless you tremendously. Much Love. Jay-P Jean-Paul (Jay-P) Crouch (jansenmf@nampak.co.za) Sunday, April 27, 2003 at 14:41:23 (PDT) Hey Will! I have been trying to contact you for some time and I just happened to find your website. I heard that you were a Christian and I was wondering if you. I play drums for a Southern Gospel group, The Bradys. I hope to hear back from you and maybe meet up with you sometime. Are you going to be at the summer namm show? I am making plans to be there myself. God Bless Will, and I look forward to hearing from you. I also dug out some of the Yellowjackets "tapes", Yes I said tapes, I needed to be reminded of scale at which you guys were playing, Keep on rocking......SLAM! (I was the bass player) By the way, you should have signed Travis's chest... that would have been hilarious. Anyways, I've seen a bunch of clinicians and guest stars come through Missoula, and you were definitely my favorite so far. Mainly though, it was just cool to play with a big gun. Maybe sometime I'll come check out the Wayne Brady Show or any band you may be touring with to see you in your element! I mention to you that my wife and I were recently married and at the end of our ceremony by my request, we had one of the tracks from the Four Corners record playing during that time. I am big fan of your and I too am a drummer. You rank up there to me in my book with some of the great one like Harvey Mason, Lenny White, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers and the like. I really enjoyed you all as a group and was somewhat selfish to learn of your leaving because no one else could replace you. I do hope to see you again and be able to speak to you as I'm sure a lot of people would like to as well. You even autographed the cd that I purchased. Anyway, I'm a grown man carrying on this way makes me feel kinda crazy but, I just love the gift and the art that God has blessed so many of us with. Man stay up. Thanks for the your inspiration. The content is timeless, your approach is.....Gooovry, and the sentiment is a love of what you are doing. Could you start just setting up a digital camera in your practice room in order to start compiling your segments for a DVD later? Your interview style is a sure sign of your own "The Wil Kennedy show" to come. As a result of listening to your interview, I am going to pull out the Carter video that has been on the shelf with all the others that I have yet to get to. Anyway, Wil's Practice Room is most inspiring. I am going to work on my groove right now. I'm a drummer and I'm realy talented I've been trying to copy all the rethym that you played from Freedom land(Yellow Jackets)to Remembrance by Bobby Macferrin. I can feel what you play I mean I can get the message you trying to tell those who are listening to your drumm. Your drumms are talking and thanks for your good way of driving song, cause now I'm trying to learn to sing, not being too technical and be less musical cause tha's what you are. You are so musical and I thank God for you that now we can learn quality things from you. I'll wait for reply and one day I'll meet you. God bless. Greg www.greg-manning.com Greg Manning (contact@greg-manning.com) Saturday, July 13, 2002 at 09:58:04 (PDT) Hello Will, I really enjoy your performances with Jonathan Butler at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland,CA...July-5-7... and from the sold out shows, everyone appreicated the music as well.. Too bad their was not a live recording of the shows, because fans all around the world missed some incredible performances. Will when I seen you perform on that stylist drum kit, which affords you the ability, to create alot of nice ranges of sounds. I here the intensitive of Roy Haynes and the smoothest of Max Roach, you are truly a young Lion on the drums. The drums in my opinion is the most complicated of all the instruments in the band to play, because the pressue is on the drummer to whole everyone together or to allow for individual musical expression, its remarkable to hear the diverse patterns in harmony and tempo which allow optimum creativy. you make it look so easy. That old saying "timing is everything" You are right on it Keep up the good work. Erroll, Yoshi's Jazz Club Staff....Peace.. Erroll Woodworth (luvewood@yahoo.com) Thursday, July 11, 2002 at 10:22:49 (PDT) What's up Will K.! I first discovered you and the Yellowjackets on the Modern Drummer Festival Weekend Saturday tape for 1998, when I received it as a Christmas present from my father in 1999. When I first heard your drumming, I completely flipped-out. I had never heard anyone play as good, or even close to your amazingly unique style. I became obsessed and blasted those sounds through my crappy speakers and reviewed that large section of the tape at least three times a day, every day for about three and a half weeks. I was and still am extremely facsinated with your definately one-of-a-kind style. Over the last couple of years, I searched many music stores and purchased and received as Christmas presents, every yellowjackets album except Club Nocturn that you provided the drum beats for. I'm having trouble trying to find Club Nocturn in stores. Anyway, right off the bat when watching you play on the tape, I realized that there was something weird to your playing to me, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Then after purchasing the absolute best drummer tape ever: Be A Drumhead!, I heard you say that you were left-handed but right-footed. I became angry becaused I realized that I will never ever be able to play exactly like you. The next best thing is to be the kid that can come the closest to matching your incredibly difficult style. My story is pretty similar to Tony Royster Jr.. I started playing when I was three, I had near professional lessons from my uncle and the friend to the family, gospel drummer at my church, up until I was seven. But my true inspiration for making music in general comes from my amazing father, Horace Bland. He completely taught me the whole concept of music, and reading and writing music. He is an astonishing, professional gospel pianist/keyboardist awaiting for discovery. I am also. I progressed to the great skill level that I am at right now, through his enormous amount of critism and knit-picking to perfect everything I do, exspecially making music. One thing that puts me above a lot of drummers is that when my lessoned ceised at the age of seven, I TAUGHT MYSELF EVERY THING I KNOW TODAY beyond the basics without phisical help from anybody. I accomplished this by watching tons of music videos and mimickking the beats being played by professional drummers. I should also mention that my actual first job was playing only with my dad at scheduled gigs around Columbus in fancy restaraunts and banquets and few other places. I was only four when this took place. It stopped when I was about ten years old. This should give you an idea how good I am. I feel that if I were as fortunate to have an enormous, good drumkit as Tony Royster Jr., that many people would perfer my drumming over his. The only thing I feel he can do way better than me is playing double-bass. That's because I never even received the chance to work with a double-bass kit or pedal. And I certainly don't have the money to by a real, professional drumkit. From the age of seven when I first received it, I still today play on a broke-down, ghetto piece of junk, 5-piece starter kit named TJ Percussion. I can definately tell you that I have completely MASTERED this Crap-drumSet. All that aside, I just want you to know that you are the absolute best, most talented drummer on the planet. You are way better than Dennis Chambers, the only drummer that can even mistakenly be put into the same catagory as you! I live in Columbus, Ohio; home to the infamous percussion store: COLUMBUS PRO PERCUSSION and I come all the across town to visit there more than a lot. However, I had never got the chance to come to your clinics or any drum clinics ever. I want to meet you and I want you to hear me play. It would be a dream of mine to become your kid drummer sidekick as Tony Royster Jr. became Dennis' in the Common Ground video. I know that would most likely never happen, but a guy can dream can't he? Anyway, I wish for you to do another clinic at COLUMBUS PRO PERCUSSION, so that I can come see you in person. I truely feel sorry that you have to read through all of this crap, but I just had to let you know that I am one of your biggest fans, if not the biggest; not weight-wise either, ha ha ha! I can assure you that after obsessively practicing your extremely hard style, that I am the absolute closest to mimickking it. Sorry it took me so long to introduce myself to you. It's just that I hate writing and I'm horrible at typing. It took me three and a half hours to type this junk, but you are definately worth it. Good luck sitting through and reading all this without falling asleep. Just read it in sections and you'll be okey, ha ha ha. Again, My name is Lamar Lee Bland, I just turned eighteen years old in March of this year, 2002--which only makes me a FEW MONTHS older than Tony Royster Jr., I live on the far east side in Columbus, Ohio, and I want to meet, hear play, and want the absolute best, most talented drummer in the entire world to hear me play. "Peace!" Lamar Lee Bland (ebony10@ameritech.net) Thursday, July 11, 2002 at 03:15:47 (PDT) Will, you might not remember me, but we met in Houston @ the Percussion Center. Thank You! You are such an inspiration to so many as verified in the e-mails listed on your sight. You are a wonderful role model in a time that seems to have so few. Is there any chance you will be in Colorado in the next year or so? Peace & Joy! Andy Andy Baldwin (charbaldwin@pcisys.com) Sunday, June 09, 2002 at 16:27:10 (PDT) Hi Will. I'm excited and surprised to find out that you've got your own website. I wonder why I haven't tried to find anything about you via the internet before? Years ago I heard you play on cd's with yellow jackets (live wires) & one with John Patitucci for the first time, and it was great. Then somebody told me your a christian, and I got even more excited. I'm sorry, but I've let your style of playing influence me here and there when I play in church; I even set up my kit the way you had it as I had seen it on tv in a concert you did with YJ in The Hague (North Sea Jazz Festival, The Netherlands) years ago. I just tried it and it really enabled me to play more relaxed. I'm excited to buy some of your products. I hope to see you play live once. You know, a friend recently told me that you came to even my hometown to do a gig (Den Bosch, The Netherlands, in the Brabanthallen), and I missed that!? Can you imagine? It would be great to talk with you about playing the drums for God; wanna know how you think about certain things. Bless you! Erwin van Dongen. Nice site !!! john beasley (john@beasleymusic.com) Monday, June 03, 2002 at 17:17:10 (PDT) My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent! none. Edmund Sunday, June 02, 2002 at 04:49:36 (PDT) Please let me know if you do studio work for Christian projects and how much you charge. I can give you more details about the CD if you like. Thanks. The surgeons have told me that i won't play drums again. as a professional drummer for the last 7 years i won't let this beat me. i was hoping you may be able to suggest some learning techniques to help me overcome this. i was considering playing open handed? any help you could give me would be a god send! keep the groove and keep safe, matt matt neil (star_matt23@hotmail.com) Thursday, May 09, 2002 at 10:57:33 (PDT) Happy Birthday Brother. I know that you hear this a million times over, but watching and listening to your playing has been a turning point for me and my musical journey. Hearing your technical and spiritual insight of drumming has opened my eyes to a new way of playing and interpreting music. Your inspiration has challenged me to find my own musical identity, and if it be God's will, one day with practice, determination and experience I too will be at a level of professionalism that you are. Marc Johnson (madcatmarc@yahoo.com) Friday, May 03, 2002 at 10:46:55 (PDT) Man, I just love your playing and was wondering if you're sitting low now since you're not using the drum frame thing. I enjoyed your groove with the Latin percussionist in the Evans booth. Thanks for your thoughts regarding a church in the So Cal area. Speaking with you was an encouragement. Much blessings, Joe Ventura Joe Ventura (scampydrums@hotmail.com) Saturday, January 19, 2002 at 23:53:00 (PST) Hello Will, we met twice, once in '94 @ a jazz fest, and at The Barns of Wolftrap in 98', both in VA. We spoke briefly. I am very happy to hear you are a believer in Christ. Your playing has really been an inspiration to me. I have turned on so many people to The YJ, and its because of that drum work, that they have become fans. When I was growing up in the late 60s & early 70s the rock group Chicago had a drummer named Danny Seraphane, whom I thought was one of the best drummers out there, I even saw Buddy Rich perform once, and that was awsome. But I've herd you do things on a trap-set I never herd them do!! Take care and I look forward to getting your practice cd (I'm a drummer), and getting your band's cd when its released. Jesus Christ - may he richly bless you, sir. tony anthony wilcox (atony_45@hotmail.com) Friday, January 18, 2002 at 09:10:40 (PST) To my Brother...I just read some of the comments...I'm so proud of you and the impact you are having on the lives of those who recoginze TRUE talent. I love to play gospel and fusion. I just recently heard Club Nocturne. I love Spirit of the West. Will I appreciate you being a Christian and not being afrid to say it. Pray fro me as I pray for you that God will take me high as a drummer. peace and GOD Bless!! Keith Outterbridge (deaconob@hotmail.com) Thursday, January 10, 2002 at 14:34:25 (PST) Hi Will: Greetings from Puerto Rico. It was so cool of you to take the time to call me to verify my address when I ordered your practice CD,s. That,s what makes you so special, you really care about people, and don,t see yourself as an unaproachable drum hero like many other famous drummers do. You have been a major influence since the 4 corners days and it was sad to see you leave the YJ. I'm waiting for your next practice cd. In the meantime keep being such a wonderful person and drummer, believe it or not that phone call really meant a lot to me. my wife could not believe it eas "the" will kennedy when she picked the phone and told me it was you. thanks again Jose Ruiz (esojzuir@yahoo.com) Sunday, January 06, 2002 at 00:13:59 (PST) What's up man! I enjoyed playing with you at Bill Bell's retirement party. Keep up the hot playing! Marcus L. Bell (bellm@db.erau.edu) Saturday, January 05, 2002 at 19:39:33 (PST) dear Will! love your playing very much. When I heard you were leaving YJs it made me a little sad, 'cause your drums had a very great impact on what was the band's "time" and rythm like, so "round" and and moving.I have lots of friends listening to jazz, especially YJs. I used to play keyboards in a band and tried some jazz standards or my pieces, but when I first heard you, it was like a hit of a hammer onto my head; I should've started playing completely different instrument. I wonder what pushed you (if it was some musical reason)to leave the band and what are your plans now. Maybe the band of yours or you've already started any project.I'd appreciate any information. Wish you all the best and can't wait for reply. pawel Paweł Cieślak (pc1@kki.net.pl) Thursday, January 03, 2002 at 12:01:48 (PST) |
